Description

The hilt comprising an oval pommel, straight quillons with outer and inner scrolling bars, the original writhen grip bound with wire. The hilt showing substantial traces of original gilding, is engraved with foliage on a stippled ground, with heavy silver encrustation consisting of groups of dots and formalised flowers. The double-edged German blade with narrow fuller, stamped with IHS for JESUS HOMINUM SALVATOR (Jesus the Saviour of Men). Although the hilt is of international form, the silver encrusted decoration is of type that is found on several hilts known to be English.
