Description

This wonderful design for cannon was engraved by Adriaen van de Velde and published by A Bloteingh in 1671. It shows two extraordinary 48-pounders cast at Lübeck by Albrecht Benningck for Dutch States General in 1669. These guns were looted by the French from the Arsenal at Delft in 1810. In 1814 one gun was sent to Berlin, the other to Vienna. The Berlin gun was destroyed in the Second World War; the gun at Vienna is now in the Heeresgeschichtliches Museum. Albrecht Benninck was appointed official gunfounder to the town Lübeck in 1665.
