Description

The hilt formed of a single carved piece of rock crystal swelling to form a strongly pronounced pommel of characteristic beaked shape, the base encircled by two short panels of close-set diagonal flutes, the inner panel slightly taller and each bordered by a band of gold inset with a continuous row of rectangular cut gem stones, the inner row formed of red garnets and the opposing row of green stones, perhaps emeralds. The hilt capped at its base by an iron collar decorated with bands of fine gold koftgari flowers and border patterns, and the pommel inset with a small iron loop for a tassel pierced with scrolls and enriched with gold koftgari. Mounted with a sharply tapering single-edged blade of watered steel, the base of the blade encased by an iron moulding decorated with gold koftgari patterns en suite with the hilt. In its wooden scabbard covered in red velvet, with gilt-copper mounts pricked with diaper patterns of lotus flowers, and the locket with suspension loop of gilt metal pierced with a lotus emblem.
