Augsburg silver beaker with embossed wheat sheath decoration. Ca. 1680
Struck with the town mark for Augsburg on the underside.
Makers mark is missing ,but with assay master’s assay scrape.
Journey man who traveled from town to town , working under different silver smiths to learn the trade were allowed to make apprentice pieces or indeed master pieces before registering their maker’s mark. The town ‘s assay master would assay the piece and if it was up to standard thy would strike it with the town mark but no makers mark. Pieces like this are quite rare.
