Emma Biggs (b. 1956) and Matthew Collings (b. 1955) share a collaborative practice which produces abstract, patterned paintings with immediate formal similarities to mosaics. Both artists have separate independent careers: Biggs is a mosaicist while Collings is a well-known broadcaster and writer on art. ‘Bethesda’ is a typical example of their shared practice. With a muted palette the painting is composed of a neatly ordered diagonal grid, which breaks the surface of the canvas into diamond shapes, which are further quartered. Each diamond quarter is a different colour or tone, and the relationships between each segment create a lively visual effect.
