Eighteenth Century cameo ring depicting a couple in erotic embrace. The agate cameo and the setting are from the second half of the eighteenth century. The cameo is most probably a copy of a fresco from the newly discovered/ 1749/and excavated town of Pompeii and Herculaneum. Eighteen century tourism to Italy exploded after these discoveries and gave a fillip to the jewelers and gem cutters of Rome and Naples. This period of The Grand Tour
produced some of the best quality local artworks in the manner of “Classical revival”. As “legitimate” claimants to all classical Roman culture, large number of workshops set about producing high quality marbles, bronzes, mosaics, inlaid marble, gold jewelry, hard stone cameos, intaglios, etc. The subject was mainly from Greek or Roman Mythology, and just occasionally something unique and one off, like this ring was produced, probably to order. Images like this ring came to light at Pompeii as frescoes and wall paintings and one can assume that 2000 years ago they did not cause offence the same way as they are today.
