Kate Moss is a portrait of Britain’s leading super-model descending a staircase. Her scantily dressed but professional figure walks towards us with composure. Nevertheless, bright flashes of pink, yellow and turquoise highlight the balustrade and the mirror over wich the silkscreen is stretched. Its dulled shine mutes the lighting, perhaps a flashbulb, drawing us into a poignant study of the celebrity. Shashou has pioneered her own method of layering newspaper with paint and other media in order to invest the surfaces of her work with a distinct character. Shashou’s surfaces rapture and fracture revealing the flawed reality of the limelight.
Sandra Shashou (born in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil) lives and works in London.
