Kim Dong Yoo (b. 1965) is renowned for the technical acrobatics of his large-scale hand-painted portraits of legendary celebrities. Drawing upon the Warholian Pop heritage of striking colours, subjects are household faces in recognisable poses. Each portrait is dedicated to two figures with the primary face composed of a numerous tiny portraits of another.
This work is made up of 1,369 ‘micro-mosaic’ squares of J.F.K varying in light and shade to produce the iconic image of Marilyn Monroe.
