A Nelson related stern carving, perhaps from H.M. Ship Nelson. A British sailor is shown amongst broken masts and tattered sails lamenting over two shields, one with a profile of Nelson before a union flag the other carved with the names of Nelson’s great victories; Nile, Copenhagen and Trafalgar.
English circa 1810.
Horatio was a 5th rate ship of 1807, the more likely candidate for this carving, the Nelson, was launched after these wars and, as such, saw little action during her long life. Being presented to the Australian Government in 1867 as a coastal defence and training ship, she was sold in 1908 and broken up at Launceston in 1928.
